Garage Door Lock Repair in Durham

Our one Durham garage job, in High Shincliffe, was the most common garage request: lost keys. The section on it below shows how a garage is made lockable again without a new door.

This page explains that, and the other garage lock faults: a key that will not turn, a handle that turns without locking, a door that has dropped, and damage after an attempted break-in.

We cover the whole Durham area for this service, including Bearpark, Belmont, Bowburn, Brandon, Carville, Coxhoe, Croxdale, Dragonville, Framwellgate Moor, Gilesgate, Kelloe, Langley Moor, Littletown, Meadowfield, Neville’s Cross, Newton Hall, Pity Me, Quarrington Hill, Shadforth, Sherburn, Sherburn Road and Ushaw Moor.

A Garage Job We Have Recorded Near Durham

  • Lost keys for both doors of a double garage — High Shincliffe. The customer wanted to start using their double garage but had lost the keys to both doors, so neither could be locked. New handles with keys were fitted, and both doors could be locked again. See the job

Finding the Fault on a Garage Door

  • Key will not turn: usually a worn or corroded cylinder, or the door sitting slightly out of line so the lock binds.
  • Handle turns, nothing locks: the fault is in the handle mechanism, cam, bars or cables that run to the side latches.
  • Door has dropped: the latches no longer meet their keeps; fit and movement are checked before anything is replaced.
  • Snapped or jammed key: do not force it; it can usually be extracted, and the cylinder checked afterwards.
  • Forced lock: damaged parts are replaced, with a stronger lock where it suits.

Stiffness and linkage faults are usually repaired; a seized cylinder or failed lock body is normally replaced. You are told which first.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have lost the garage keys. Do I need a new garage door?

No. New handles with their own keys make the door lockable again, as on the High Shincliffe double garage.

How is the price worked out?

By what has failed: the cylinder, the handles, the mechanism or the door’s alignment. The price is confirmed before work starts.

Do you cut keys or do car keys?

No. We do not offer auto locksmith services and we do not cut keys.
