Window Locks: Why a Window Will Not Lock

When a uPVC window will not lock, the handle is rarely the only part to look at. The handle turns a gearbox in the frame edge, the gearbox moves the locking bar, and the bar pushes locking points into keeps on the frame. A fault in any of them stops the window locking:

• The gearbox: a bathroom window in Chester-le-Street would not lock because its gearbox mechanism had failed; it was replaced (the job).
• The locking points: in Peterlee, two windows had the same fault, mechanisms that no longer drove the shootbolts properly, so neither locked or unlocked reliably; both were changed (the job).
• A lost key: a locking window handle with a lost key can be swapped for a new handle and key, as in Grindon in Sunderland (the job).
• Hinges and alignment: a window that has dropped on worn hinges can stop the locking points meeting their keeps; the hinges are replaced or the window adjusted.

Lockable Handles and Restrictors on Upstairs Windows

Window work is not only repairs. A window that opens wide at a low upstairs sill can be made safer by fitting lockable handles and a window restrictor, which stops the window opening beyond a set point.
