Burglary Repairs in Durham
After a break-in or an attempt in Durham, the door or window has to be made lockable first, and then made stronger than it was. This page explains what forced entry tends to damage and what goes back in its place.
No break-in repair is recorded in the Durham area yet; the example below is from East Rainton, near Houghton-le-Spring, and is labelled as such.

Recent Work in the Durham Area
Genuine jobs we have completed in the Durham area, of any kind (not necessarily burglary repair work):
- Gearbox Replacement in Neville’s Cross: The key would not turn to lock the door properly because the gearbox was faulty; the gearbox was changed.
- Lock change in Framwellgate Moor: A fault on an auto-locking door made it hard to open. Rather than replacing the locking strip, the door was changed to lock manually and an anti-snap thumbturn was fitted.
- Lockable window handle replacement and window restrictors in Sherburn (Window Handles & Window Restrictors): The customer had just moved into the house and wanted more security on low-opening upstairs windows. The handles were replaced with lockable handles and window restrictors were fitted.

Damaged Locks, Cylinders and Mechanisms
A lock can be damaged by more than forced entry, and the fix follows what has failed. Two Durham-area jobs:
- A jammed lock — Kelloe. A care home’s medication-room lock had jammed so the key would not go in; it was removed and a new one fitted. See the job
- A broken hook casing — Neville’s Cross. The top hook of a front door would not retract because its casing had fallen apart; a new casing was fitted and the door realigned. See the job
Where a lock has been forced, the cylinder is normally replaced rather than repaired. For worn locks and sticking mechanisms, see our lock repairs in Durham.
What We Check After Forced Entry
- The cylinder: the usual target. A forced or snapped cylinder is replaced, normally with an anti-snap or 3-star one.
- Handles and the area around the lock: damaged handles are replaced, and a repair plate can cover marking or damage on a uPVC door.
- The mechanism along the door edge: a gearbox or hook that was forced may still feel stiff even after the lock is changed.
- The frame and keeps: a forced door can be left out of line, so the locking points no longer seat.
An Attempt That Failed, and What Was Fitted
In East Rainton, near Houghton-le-Spring, high-security locks stopped the intruders getting in, but the lock and handle were damaged in the attempt. A new handle, a repair plate over most of the damage and a new high-security 3-star lock were fitted (the job).
