• The keeps are the slots on the frame the hooks and bolts lock into. If one has moved, or the door has, a bolt catches and the handle or key goes stiff. The keep is adjusted or refitted.
• The gearbox sits behind the handle. When it fails the handle will not lift, lifts without locking, or the door locks but will not open. It is replaced on its own. In Ryhope, in Sunderland, a composite door’s gearbox was not pulling the latch back, and a new one cured it (the job).
• The cylinder is where the key goes. If the key will not turn, enter or come out, the cylinder is changed.
