Lock Repair in Washington
If a lock in Washington has started to stick, grind, turn loosely or refuse the key, this page explains what each of those usually means, which part is repaired, and when a new lock is the better answer.
The aim is the smallest repair that leaves the door secure; the price is confirmed before work starts.
We cover the whole Washington area for this service, including Albany, Barmston, Concord, Fatfield, Harraton, Lambton, Oxclose, Sulgrave, Usworth and Washington Village.
Recent Work in the Washington Area
Genuine jobs we have completed in the Washington area, of any kind (not necessarily lock repair work):
- Door Realignment in Washington: The composite door was rubbing along the threshold and hard to open and close; the frame was warped, so a perfect realignment was not possible, but the door was realigned into good working order.
- Window Mechanism Repair in Washington (Window Mechanisms): A faulty mechanism stopped the window opening. It was opened without damage, the mechanism was changed, and the window worked correctly again.

Lock Changes: When a New Lock Is Better Than a Repair
Most lock faults can be repaired, but some situations call for a new lock: you have moved into a property and do not know who still has keys, the keys have been lost, or the lock gives little protection against snapping.
Lock changes we have done elsewhere in our area, each labelled with where it was:
- New owner with no keys — Wheatley Hill. The buyer had no keys to the front door. It was opened non-destructively, a new anti-snap lock was fitted, and a key safe was installed so contractors could get in. See the job
- Lost keys and a drilled lock — Wingate. After losing the keys, the customer had tried to drill the lock. It was changed to an anti-snap thumbturn lock. See the job
- Auto-locking door made manual — Framwellgate Moor. A fault on an auto-locking door made it hard to open. Rather than replacing the locking strip, the door was changed to lock manually and an anti-snap thumbturn was fitted. See the job
A thumbturn lock opens from the inside without a key, which helps if keys go missing or you need to get out quickly.

Lock Repair Coverage Across Washington
Lock repairs cover all of Washington: Washington Village, Albany, Barmston, Concord, Fatfield, Harraton, Lambton, Oxclose, Sulgrave, Usworth and the districts between.
What the Symptom Usually Means
- Key stiff only when the door is shut: the door or a keep has moved; an adjustment, not a new lock.
- Key stiff even with the door open: wear or dirt inside the cylinder; often a new cylinder.
- Handle lifts but nothing locks: the gearbox inside the door edge; see uPVC door lock repairs in Washington.
- Key will not go in, or spins: a failed cylinder; replaced.
- Key snapped or stuck: extracted first, then the lock checked; if it is locking you out, see emergency locksmith in Washington.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it worth repairing an old lock?
If one part has failed and the lock still offers good security, yes. If it is worn throughout or easy to snap, a new anti-snap cylinder is usually the better spend, and you are told which before work starts.
Do you cut keys or do car keys?
No. We do not offer auto locksmith services and we do not cut keys.
