uPVC Door Lock Repair in Washington

Most uPVC and composite door faults in Washington come down to three things: the gearbox the handle drives, the hooks and bolts along the edge, and how the door sits in its frame. This page explains each, and what can be repaired without a new door.

Our Teal Farm job, a composite door with a warped frame, shows the limits of realignment as well as what it achieves.

We cover the whole Washington area for this service, including Albany, Barmston, Concord, Fatfield, Harraton, Lambton, Oxclose, Sulgrave, Usworth and Washington Village.

Recent Work in the Washington Area

Genuine jobs we have completed in the Washington area, of any kind (not necessarily uPVC door lock repair work):

  • Door Realignment in Washington: The composite door was rubbing along the threshold and hard to open and close; the frame was warped, so a perfect realignment was not possible, but the door was realigned into good working order.
  • Window Mechanism Repair in Washington (Window Mechanisms): A faulty mechanism stopped the window opening. It was opened without damage, the mechanism was changed, and the window worked correctly again.

Doors That Rub, Drop or Bind: What Realignment Can Do

A uPVC or composite door that rubs on the threshold, drags as it closes or needs the handle forced is usually out of line rather than broken. Left alone, the locking points stop meeting their keeps and the strain ends up in the gearbox.

Most doors are realigned by adjusting the hinges, and some hinge types need their own tools. In Teal Farm, Washington, a composite door was rubbing along the threshold; its hinges were adjusted and the door was put back into good working order (it is in the recent work listed above). The frame on that door was warped, so a perfect fit was not possible: where the frame itself has moved, realignment makes the door open, close and lock properly, but it cannot make a distorted frame square again. You are told which applies before work starts.

Patio, French and Composite Doors

Patio doors, French doors and composite front doors lock with the same kind of multipoint mechanism as a uPVC door, so the same faults appear: a gearbox that stops throwing the bolts, a shootbolt that will not retract, or a hinge that no longer adjusts.

These are door jobs from other areas we cover, beside the Washington door realignment listed above:

  • Patio door that would not lock — West Rainton. A damaged bolt thrower on the gearbox stopped the patio door locking. A new gearbox was fitted. See the job
  • French door that would not open — Newbottle. A faulty gearbox was not retracting the bottom shootbolt. The door was opened non-destructively, the gearbox changed and the door realigned. See the job
  • Composite door hard to open and close — Doxford Park. A faulty hinge would not adjust. A new hinge was fitted and the door realigned. See the job

The Gearbox and the Locking Strip

Lifting the handle turns a gearbox in the door edge, and the gearbox drives a strip of hooks, rollers and bolts into the keeps on the frame. When the gearbox fails the handle may not lift, may lift without locking, or may lock but still open the door. A failed gearbox is usually replaced on its own; when the hooks and keeps along the strip are worn too, the whole mechanism is replaced.

When the Problem Is the Cylinder

If the handle works but the key will not turn, go in or come out, the euro cylinder has failed rather than the mechanism. It is changed on its own, usually for an anti-snap type, and the rest of the door is left as it is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every door be realigned perfectly?

Not always. Where the frame itself has warped, as on the Teal Farm door, the door can be made to open, close and lock properly, but the frame cannot be made square again.

How is the price worked out?

By what has failed: alignment, the gearbox, the cylinder or the whole mechanism. Pricing is confirmed before work begins.
