Window Won’t Close or Lock

A window that will not lock is covered under Window Lock Repairs below. A window that will not close properly is more often the hinges: worn hinges let the opening part catch or drop, so it no longer closes tightly against the frame and can be hard to lock. Window Lock Repairs

On most uPVC windows the lock is built into the window. Turning the handle drives a gearbox in the edge of the opening part of the window, and the gearbox moves locking bolts (shootbolts) into keeps on the frame. If the window will not lock, the fault is usually in the handle or that mechanism, and that part can be replaced on its own, keeping the window and the glass.

Signs the locking mechanism is failing: the handle feels stiff or will not reach the locked position, the window still feels loose when it is shut, or it will not lock even with the handle in the locked position, as in the Roker job above.

Locking handles that take a key are changed in the same way. If the key is lost, a new handle and key can be fitted without damaging the window, as in the Grindon job above.
