Lock Repair in Sunderland

A stiff key, a lock that turns but does nothing, a key that will not go in: this page explains how we work out which part has failed on a Sunderland door, and when a repair is enough and when a new lock or cylinder is the better answer.

Most of it comes from our own Sunderland job records. More than once the fix was not the lock at all but the gearbox or the door’s alignment, so we find the cause before anything is replaced.

We cover the whole Sunderland area for this service, including Ashbrooke, Ayres Quay, Barnes, Castletown, Cleadon, Downhill, Doxford Park, East Herrington, Farringdon, Ford Estate, Fulwell, Fulwell Mill, Grangetown, Hendon, Herrington, High Barnes, Hylton Castle, Middle Herrington, Millfield, Monkwearmouth, Pallion, Redhouse, Roker, Ryhope, Ryhope Doxford, Ryhope Village, Seaburn, Seaburn Dene, Silksworth, South Hylton, Southwick, Thorney Close, Town End Farm and Tunstall.

Recent Lock Repair and Replacement Work in Sunderland

A couple of genuine, recently completed jobs from around Sunderland:

Key Would Not Go Into the Lock — Millfield

the customer could not get either key into the lock to lock the door. The first pin was faulty, which was causing the problem, and a new cylinder was fitted.

Stiff Lock, Faulty Gearbox — Pallion

the door had become really stiff to lock and unlock. A new lock the customer had bought did not solve it, because the fault was a faulty gearbox and the door was considerably out of alignment. A new gearbox and an anti-snap euro cylinder were fitted, the door was realigned and it was working perfectly again.

The Locks We Work On Around Sunderland

"Lock repair" covers several different locks, and the right fix depends on which one has failed. These are the kinds in our recent Sunderland jobs:

  • Euro cylinders on uPVC and composite doors: the part the key goes into. A failed pin, a snapped key or a lock that offers little security usually means a new cylinder, often an anti-snap one.
  • Thumbturn cylinders: opened from inside without a key. One was fitted in Castletown so nobody has to find a key to get out in an emergency, and one in Pallion because keys kept getting lost.
  • Sash locks: in Ryhope a sash lock whose key spun and whose latch had failed was replaced with a British Standard sash lock and keep.
  • Multipoint mechanisms and gearboxes: when the handle will not lock the door, the cause is usually here rather than in the lock (see below).
  • Window locks and locking handles: a window gearbox in Roker and a lost window key in Grindon. See our window repairs in Sunderland.

Handle Lifts But Door Won’t Lock

When the handle lifts but the door does not lock, the lock itself is often not the cause. On Sunderland doors we have traced it to the gearbox: in Doxford Park the hooks were not engaging when the handle was lifted, and in Tunstall the mechanism was not retracting the hooks. The gearbox was replaced, in Tunstall with new handles and a cylinder as well. On a Thorney Close door the handle would not lift at all, and the cause was also the gearbox.

For gearbox faults, multipoint lock issues and dropped uPVC doors, see our uPVC door lock repairs in Sunderland.

Snapped Key or Key Stuck in the Lock

Do not try to force out a snapped or stuck key: it can push the broken piece further in or damage the cylinder. Two recent Sunderland jobs:

  • The only key snapped in the lock — South Hylton. The broken key was removed without snapping the lock out, and the lock was replaced.
  • A key stuck in a jammed replacement lock — Pallion. The lock was so jammed that the handles had to be drilled off before the cylinder and handle could be replaced.

Repair vs Replacement

Not every faulty lock needs replacing. Many of the door faults we have recorded around Sunderland were put right without a new lock: a failed gearbox replaced on its own (Thorney Close, Doxford Park, Ryhope, Barnes), or a hinge that would no longer adjust replaced so the door could be realigned (Doxford Park).

  • Repair is usually right for alignment faults, stiffness, a worn hinge or a failed gearbox.
  • Replacement is right for a failed or damaged cylinder, a lock that offers little security, or keys you can no longer account for, as in the jobs below.

We tell you which it is before any work starts.

When Changing the Lock Is the Right Job

We repair a lock when it can be repaired. A new lock or cylinder is the right answer when the keys are no longer under your control, when the lock itself has failed, or when it offers too little security. These are recent Sunderland jobs where changing the lock was the right call:

  • You have just moved in — Castletown. The customer was not sure how many keys to their French doors were still in circulation, so the locks were changed. See the job
  • Keys keep getting lost — Pallion. The lock was changed to a thumbturn lock because keys kept going missing. See the job
  • The lock is faulty — Castletown. The door was hard to lock from outside. The lock was changed to an anti-snap thumbturn, so nobody has to find a key to get out in an emergency. See the job
  • The key spins and the latch has failed — Ryhope. A faulty sash lock was replaced with a new British Standard sash lock and keep. See the job
  • The locks offer little security — Doxford Park. The existing locks gave little protection against a break-in, so anti-snap locks were fitted to the front and back doors. See the job

A new lock does not fix every fault. In the Pallion job shown above, the customer had already bought and fitted a new lock, but the door was still stiff because the real faults were the gearbox and the door being out of alignment. We find the cause first, so you do not pay for a lock you do not need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will you try to repair the lock before replacing it?

Yes. A lock is replaced when it has failed, offers too little security or the keys are no longer under your control; otherwise the faulty part is repaired. You are told which before work starts.

How is the price worked out?

By what has failed: a cylinder, a mechanism, an alignment fault or a key problem. The likely cause and the price are explained before any work begins.

Do you do car keys or cut keys?

No — we do not offer auto locksmith services and we do not cut keys.
