Common Reasons a Door Won’t Lock

One of the most common causes of a door failing to lock is a faulty multipoint locking mechanism. We regularly repair uPVC and composite doors across Sunderland suffering from gearbox failures, dropped doors, stiff handles and lock alignment problems.

Signs Your Door Lock Is Starting to Fail

Many locks begin showing warning signs before they fail completely. If your handle feels harder to lift, the key becomes difficult to turn or the door only locks intermittently, it is usually a sign the mechanism is beginning to fail.

Ignoring the problem can often lead to a full lock failure which may leave the door stuck locked or unable to secure properly.

Doors That Would Not Lock: From Our Job Records

When the Door Has Dropped Out of Line

A uPVC door that has dropped or moved in its frame stops the locking hooks and bolts meeting their keeps, so the handle will not lift or feels clunky, even though nothing is broken. Realigning the door, by adjusting its hinges and keeps, often fixes it without any new parts. These jobs, outside Sunderland, were fixed that way:

• Clunky handle, door would not lock — Ferryhill. The door could not be locked when closed and the handle sounded clunky when lifted. It was realigned and tested. See the job

When a gearbox has also been damaged by a door out of line, it is replaced and the door realigned at the same visit, as on the Pallion job above.

When the Handle Will Not Lift: Gearbox or Alignment?

If the handle will not lift, or it lifts but the door still does not lock, the cause is usually one of two things: the door has dropped out of line, as above, or the gearbox has failed. The gearbox is the part inside the door edge that the handle and key work; when it fails, the hooks and bolts stop moving properly even though the door is in line.

A simple check helps tell them apart. With the door open, lift the handle. If it lifts and the hooks come out freely, the mechanism is working and the door is probably out of line. If it will not lift, or the hooks do not move, the gearbox has usually failed and needs replacing. A short video of this on WhatsApp shows us which it is.
