Multipoint Mechanism and Gearbox Repairs

Most of the uPVC and composite door faults we have recorded around Sunderland came down to the gearbox, the part in the edge of the door that the handle and key drive. It does not fail the same way every time, so the symptom is worth describing when you get in touch:

• The handle will not lift to lock the door (Thorney Close).
• The handle lifts, but the hooks do not engage (Doxford Park).
• The door locks, but the handle can still open it (Doxford Park, a gearbox that had failed while still under warranty).
• The latch will not pull back, so the door is hard to lock and unlock (a composite door in Ryhope).
• The door will not open at all (Barnes, where the bottom hook case was also virtually hanging off).

In those jobs the gearbox was replaced and the rest of the locking strip kept, with the hook case changed too where it had broken. Where the whole mechanism is worn out, it is replaced instead, as on the High Barnes door that was given a new multipoint mechanism, a full-length keep and new handles. Door Alignment Issues

A door that has dropped or moved in its frame puts the hooks and bolts out of line with the keeps, and the strain ends up in the gearbox. A door that has become stiff to lock is often the first sign.

That was the cause on a Pallion door that had become really stiff to lock and unlock. The customer had already bought and fitted a new lock, which did not help and was too small once fitted: the faults were the gearbox and a door that was considerably out of alignment. The gearbox was replaced, an anti-snap euro cylinder fitted and the door realigned. On another Pallion door with a damaged gearbox, the door was realigned when the gearbox was replaced.

If your door has become stiff, send a photo before buying a new lock: a new cylinder does not cure a gearbox or alignment fault.

Composite Doors as Well as uPVC

Most composite front doors use a multipoint lock, a gearbox and a euro cylinder, hung on adjustable hinges, so the faults we repair on uPVC doors happen on composite doors too. Recent Sunderland composite door jobs:

Snapped or Damaged Euro Cylinders

The euro cylinder is the part the key goes into. When it fails, the rest of the door can be sound but the key will not lock or open it. Recent Sunderland examples:
